MODULE 19: Vocabulary: Work & Education

REPORTED SPEECH & REPORTING VERBS

1. PHASE 1: WARM-UP & CASE

Warm-up (Speaking Part 1/4 Style)

  • What do you think is the most challenging aspect of adjusting to a new workplace or educational institution?
  • How often do you have to relay information or messages from one person to another in your daily life?
  • Do you agree that practical experience is more valuable than academic qualifications?

The Case: The Restructuring Appraisal

The manager announced that the department would undergo significant restructuring the following month. She urged the staff to update their vocational qualifications immediately. During the appraisal, David admitted having neglected several crucial deadlines recently. Furthermore, he blamed the outdated curriculum for hindering his academic progress. Consequently, the director advised him to enroll in an intensive workshop. Finally, she warned the interns that they might face severe consequences unless their overall performance improved drastically.

Sentence Analysis (Zero-Compression Protocol)

The manager announced that the department would undergo significant restructuring the following month.
[ðə ˈmænɪdʒə r əˈnaʊnst ðæt ðə dɪˈpɑːtmənt wʊd ˌʌndəˈɡəʊ sɪɡˈnɪfɪkənt riːˈstrʌktʃərɪŋ ðə ˈfɒləʊɪŋ mʌnθ]
[Определенный] менеджер объявила что [определенный] отдел будет претерпевать значительную реструктуризацию [определенный] следующий месяц.
Менеджер объявила, что в следующем месяце отдел подвергнется значительной реструктуризации.
Exam-Hack: В косвенной речи 'will' превращается в 'would' (backshift), а маркер времени 'next month' всегда заменяется на 'the following month' или 'the month after'. Глагол 'undergo' (претерпевать) — лексика уровня C1, идеальна для Use of English Part 1.
She urged the staff to update their vocational qualifications immediately.
[ʃi ɜːdʒd ðə stɑːf tu ʌpˈdeɪt ðeə vəʊˈkeɪʃənəl ˌkwɒlɪfɪˈkeɪʃənz ɪˈmiːdiətli]
Она настоятельно-призвала [определенный] персонал чтобы обновить их профессиональные квалификации немедленно.
Она настоятельно призвала сотрудников немедленно обновить свои профессиональные квалификации.
Exam-Hack: Структура 'urge somebody to do something'. Глагол 'urge' — мощная замена базовому 'tell' или 'ask'. 'Vocational' (профессионально-технический) — ключевой дистрактор в заданиях на разницу между work/job/career/profession.
During the appraisal, David admitted having neglected several crucial deadlines recently.
[ˈdjʊərɪŋ ði əˈpreɪzəl | ˈdeɪvɪd ədˈmɪtɪd ˈhævɪŋ nɪˈɡlɛktɪd ˈsɛvrəl ˈkruːʃəl ˈdɛdlaɪnz ˈriːsəntli]
Furthermore, he blamed the outdated curriculum for hindering his academic progress.
[ˈfɜːðəˈmɔː | hi bleɪmd ði aʊtˈdeɪtɪd kəˈrɪkjʊləm fɔː ˈhɪndərɪŋ hɪz ˌækəˈdɛmɪk ˈprəʊɡrɛs]
Более-того, он обвинил [определенную] устаревшую учебную-программу за препятствование его академическому прогрессу.
Более того, он обвинил устаревшую учебную программу в том, что она препятствует его академическому прогрессу.
Exam-Hack: 'Blame somebody/something FOR doing something'. Это классический паттерн для Part 4 (Key Word Transformation). Глагол 'hinder' (препятствовать) заменяет простое 'stop' или 'slow down'.
Consequently, the director advised him to enroll in an intensive workshop.
[ˈkɒnsɪkwəntli | ðə dɪˈrɛktə r ədˈvaɪzd hɪm tu ɪnˈrəʊl ɪn ən ɪnˈtɛnsɪv ˈwɜːkʃɒp]
Следовательно, [определенный] директор посоветовал ему чтобы записаться в [неопределенный] интенсивный семинар.
Следовательно, директор посоветовал ему записаться на интенсивный семинар.
Exam-Hack: Паттерн 'advise somebody TO DO something'. Остерегайтесь ловушки 'advise to him' — предлог 'to' перед объектом здесь не нужен. Коллокация 'enroll in' (записаться на) часто тестируется в заданиях с пропусками.
Finally, she warned the interns that they might face severe consequences unless their overall performance improved drastically.
[ˈfaɪnəli | ʃi wɔːnd ði ˈɪntɜːnz ðæt ðeɪ maɪt feɪs sɪˈvɪə ˈkɒnsɪkwənsɪz ənˈlɛs ðeə r ˈəʊvərɔːl pəˈfɔːməns ɪmˈpruːvd ˈdræstɪkəli]
Наконец, она предупредила [определенных] стажеров что они могут столкнуться суровыми последствиями если-не их общая производительность улучшилась радикально.
Наконец, она предупредила стажеров, что они могут столкнуться с серьезными последствиями, если их общие показатели не улучшатся кардинально.
Exam-Hack: 'Warn somebody that...'. Обратите внимание на 'unless' (if not) + утвердительный глагол 'improved'. Союз 'unless' уже несет отрицание. Наречие 'drastically' вместо 'a lot' — еще один B2/C1 апгрейд.

3. PHASE 3: THE EXPERT LAYER

Construction: Tense Backshift & Reporting Verbs

В экзамене B2 First простого перевода времен назад (Present $\rightarrow$ Past) недостаточно. Ваша главная цель — освоить Reporting Verbs (глаголы передачи чужой речи). Они делятся на 4 грамматические категории:

Pattern Verbs Example from Direct to Reported
Verb + to-infinitive agree, refuse, offer, promise, threaten "No, I won't do it!"
$\rightarrow$ He refused to do it.
Verb + sb + to-infinitive advise, ask, tell, warn, urge, remind "You should enroll."
$\rightarrow$ She advised him to enroll.
Verb + -ing (Gerund) admit, deny, recommend, suggest "Yes, I missed the deadline."
$\rightarrow$ He admitted missing it.
Verb + prep + -ing apologise for, insist on, blame sb for, accuse sb of "It's your fault we failed!"
$\rightarrow$ He blamed me for failing.

Examiner's Notes

  • Distractors (Ловушки): В Part 4 вам дадут прямую речь с "I'm sorry" и слово FOR. Вы должны вспомнить паттерн "apologise for -ing". Никогда не пишите "apologised that he was sorry" — это тавтология.
  • Level-up: Если действие в 'admit' или 'deny' произошло сильно раньше разговора, используйте Perfect Gerund (having + V3), как в тексте: "admitted having neglected". Это показывает владение тонкими нюансами грамматики.
  • Common Mistakes: Ошибка в местоимениях и маркерах времени. "I will do it tomorrow" превращается в "He promised to do it the next day". Забыть поменять "tomorrow" на "the next day" / "the following day" — фатальная ошибка на FCE.

4. HOME TASK

A. Use of English: Part 4 (Key Word Transformation)

Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between two and five words, including the word given.

  1. "I didn't steal the confidential documents," said the intern.
    DENIED
The intern ______________________________ the confidential documents.
  2. "Don't forget to update your CV," the manager told us.
    REMINDED
    The manager ______________________________ our CVs.
  3. "I'm sorry I missed the crucial meeting yesterday," John said.
    APOLOGISED
John ______________________________ the crucial meeting the day before.

B. Vocabulary Extension (Work & Education)
