MODULE 18: Grammar — Modals of Deduction

MUST / CAN’T / MIGHT HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

1. PHASE 1: WARM-UP & CASE

Warm-up (Speaking Part 1/4 Style)

  • Have you ever lost something important and had to retrace your steps to figure out what happened?
  • How good are you at solving puzzles or guessing the endings of mystery novels?
  • Why do you think people are so fascinated by unsolved crimes and detective stories?

The Case: The Vanishing Masterpiece

The curator stared at the empty wall in absolute disbelief. The masterpiece couldn't have vanished into thin air overnight. The thief must have bypassed the alarms using sophisticated software. However, the guard might have fallen asleep, allowing the intruder to escape unnoticed. They can't have realized the true value of the stolen artwork yet.

Sentence Analysis (Zero-Compression Protocol)

The curator stared at the empty wall in absolute disbelief.
[ðə kjʊəˈreɪtə steəd æt ði ˈɛmpti wɔːl ɪn ˈæbsəluːt ˌdɪsbɪˈliːf]
[Определенный] куратор уставился на [определенную] пустую стену в абсолютном неверии.
Куратор в полном недоумении уставился на пустую стену.
Exam-Hack: Фраза "in disbelief" — отличная коллокация для Writing Part 2 (Article/Story). Забудьте про "very surprised", используйте продвинутую лексику.
The masterpiece couldn't have vanished into thin air overnight.
[ðə ˈmɑːstəpiːs ˈkʊdnt hæv ˈvænɪʃt ˈɪntuː θɪn eə r ˌəʊvəˈnaɪt]
[Определенный] шедевр не-мог иметь исчезнувшим в тонкий воздух за-ночь.
Шедевр не мог просто раствориться в воздухе за одну ночь.
Exam-Hack: "Couldn't have + V3" выражает 100% уверенность в том, что действие не произошло в прошлом (Невозможно, чтобы...). Идиома "vanish into thin air" — бонус для балла за Lexical Resource.
The thief must have bypassed the alarms using sophisticated software.
[ðə θiːf mʌst hæv ˈbaɪpɑːst ði əˈlɑːmz ˈjuːzɪŋ səˈfɪstɪkeɪtɪd ˈsɒftweə]
[Определенный] вор должен иметь обошедшим [определенные] сигнализации используя сложное программное-обеспечение.
Должно быть, вор обошел сигнализацию с помощью сложного программного обеспечения.
Exam-Hack: "Must have + V3" — это логический вывод в прошлом (Я уверен, что это произошло). Слово "sophisticated" часто тестируется в Reading Part 5/6 как синоним к "advanced/complex".
However, the guard might have fallen asleep, allowing the intruder to escape unnoticed.
[haʊˈɛvə | ðə ɡɑːd maɪt hæv ˈfɔːlən əˈsliːp | əˈlaʊɪŋ ði ɪnˈtruːdə tu ɪsˈkeɪp ʌnˈnəʊtɪst]
Однако, [определенный] охранник мог иметь упавшим спящим, позволяя [определенному] нарушителю сбежать незамеченным.
Однако охранник мог заснуть, позволив злоумышленнику скрыться незамеченным.
Exam-Hack: "Might have + V3" показывает 50% вероятность в прошлом (Возможно, это случилось). Причастный оборот "allowing the intruder..." заменяет скучное "and he allowed", поднимая оценку за грамматику (Sentence structure).
They can't have realized the true value of the stolen artwork yet.
[ðeɪ kɑːnt hæv ˈrɪəlaɪzd ðə truː ˈvæljuː ɒv ðə ˈstəʊlən ˈɑːtwɜːk jɛt]
Они не-могут иметь осознавшим [определенную] истинную ценность из [определенного] украденного произведения-искусства еще.
Они точно еще не осознали истинную ценность украденного произведения искусства.
Exam-Hack: "Can't have + V3" работает так же, как "couldn't have". Это самая частая трансформация в Key Word Transformation (Part 4) при перефразировании фразы "I am absolutely sure they didn't...".

3. PHASE 3: THE EXPERT LAYER

Construction: Modals of Deduction in the Past

Когда мы строим догадки о том, что произошло в прошлом, мы используем формулу:
MODAL VERB + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (V3)

Certainty Level Structure Example & Meaning
100% Yes Must have + V3 He must have taken it.
(I am absolutely sure he took it)
50% Maybe Might / May / Could have + V3 She might have forgotten.
(It is possible she forgot)
100% No Can't / Couldn't have + V3 They can't have left yet.
(I am absolutely sure they didn't leave)

Examiner's Notes

  • The Ultimate Trap (Distractors): Экзаменаторы обожают ловить студентов на форме отрицания. Запомните: мы никогда не используем "mustn't have" для дедукции! Если вы уверены, что чего-то не было, используйте "CAN'T HAVE" или "COULDN'T HAVE". "Mustn't" означает только запрет.
  • Level-up: Если вы описываете события по картинкам (Speaking Part 2), фразы вроде "He must have been running because he is sweating" (Perfect Continuous infinitive: Modal + have + been + V-ing) гарантируют вам высочайший балл за грамматику.
  • Common Mistakes: Забывать "have". Студенты часто говорят "He must left" или "He must had left" вместо правильного "He must have left". В Part 4 за потерю "have" вы получаете 0 баллов за всю трансформацию.

4. HOME TASK
